This “buffet Christianity” is not the faith Jesus called us to. It’s a watered-down version, built more on our sinful desires than on God’s holy truth.
Faith Customized for Comfort
Today, it’s common to hear things like:
- “God just wants me to be happy.”
- “As long as I’m a good person, that’s enough.”
- “The Bible is outdated on some issues.”
But the Bible warns us against this kind of thinking. Paul writes in 2 Timothy 4:3-4 (ESV):
“For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths.”
Sound familiar? This “itching ears” syndrome is exactly what we’re seeing. Many are no longer seeking God’s truth but are instead chasing messages that validate their own desires.
Modern Life vs. Eternal Truth
We live in a fast-paced world where everything is customized—our coffee, our news feeds, even our relationships. It’s no surprise that many have tried to customize their faith as well. A recent article in Christianity Today pointed out how younger generations are “deconstructing” their faith, questioning traditional doctrines like the authority of Scripture, the exclusivity of Christ, and even the very idea of sin.
While asking questions isn’t wrong, abandoning God’s truth to make life easier is. True theology anchors us. It doesn’t bend with every cultural trend or personal whim. Jesus said plainly in John 14:6 (ESV):
“I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”
There aren’t multiple paths to God. There aren’t customized versions of Christianity that lead to heaven. There is one Way — Christ Himself.
Commitment Matters
Another troubling trend is how low a priority God has become for many. Church is optional. Bible reading is rare. Prayer is a last resort instead of a first step.
Jesus made it clear in Matthew 6:33 (ESV):
“But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.”
God isn’t supposed to be squeezed into the leftover spaces of our lives. He’s meant to be first. Everything else is secondary.
Theology for Real Life
You might be thinking, “But theology is complicated!” It doesn’t have to be.
Good theology simply means knowing who God is and what He says about life. It’s like having a map for a road trip. Without it, you’re lost. With it, you’re confident and headed in the right direction.
- When we understand God’s holiness, we see why sin is serious.
- When we know Christ’s sacrifice, we understand why grace is amazing.
- When we trust God’s promises, we find peace in a chaotic world.
Real theology isn’t about stuffing your head with facts. It’s about transforming your heart and life.
A Loving Challenge
If you’ve found yourself treating Christianity like a buffet, picking only the easy parts, you’re not alone. But God is calling you—and all of us—to something better. Something real. Something lasting.
Let’s return to the true faith, the one “once for all delivered to the saints” (Jude 1:3, ESV).
Let’s get back to knowing God as He truly is—not as we wish Him to be.
